Coverage
Advanced search forms provide a wide range of relevant and changeable search
fields linked by boolean operators for expert searching the whole database
or for searching specific parts of the database, e.g.
- Search all - Advanced search contains all search fields, shortcuts to the
Courts' diary, Nicknames and Treaties in pdf plus it provides an EU
Wordnet multi-lingual thesaurus from the LOIS project.
- Official Journal - Advanced search contains all the relevant search fields
for accessing Official Journal records.
Search tips
- OJ OnlinePlus is not case sensitive.
- Windows copy & paste functionality (Ctrl+C, Ctrl+V) can be used in
the search form.
- Select required search fields from the pull down menu. » Search
field examples
- Search fields are linked with Boolean
operators located to the left of the field name.
- Open EU Wordnet to locate a legal term in a
different language.
- Open
to select your
search term or phrase.
- A search term can be any word, phrase or number which may be linked together
by Boolean operators, e.g. transport
and hazardous waste
- You can use wildcards to find variants of words or to substitute a single
letter, e.g. liab* or wom?n
- Dates must be entered in the format yyyy-mm-dd. You can use date
operators in Date / Year search field for date range searching, e.g. >1999,
1990-04-30~1993-04-30
- To clear the search form in order to start a new search click the
button.
- When you have finished using OJ OnlinePlus remember to log off so that your
colleagues can access the database when you have completed your search. If
you do not correctly log off but exit by closing the browser your session
will remain active until the 30-minute automatic log off.
SEARCH FIELD DESCRIPTIONS
Please refer to the list below for a description and examples of all the search
fields found in the Advanced search forms.
Authoring Institution
The name of the Institution responsible for a record, e.g.
- Commission
- Court of Justice
Note: This field also contains the Names of the country signing a
Treaty or an agreement, e.g. Netherlands, Switzerland.
If all Member States have signed then The Member States or The
Nine* Member States is entered. (* Number changes according to the number
of Member States.) Names of Committees or the Section dealing with the matter
for acts issued by the European European Parliament or the Economic and Social
Committee.
Case citations
The CELEX numbers of acts/case decisions cited in the Judgment or AG opinion
(seen in Full analytical), e.g.
Case law & legislation
This field links legislation that is directly affected by a court decision and
the text of that court decision. Enter the legislation number or the case number
in CELEX number format, e.g.
- 379L0112 - retrieves all court decisions in
which Directive 79/112 is cited and the directive itself
- 689J0369 - retrieves legislation, treaty articles
that are cited plus the judgment C-369/89

The case number as quoted in the text or title, e.g.
- 234/86 - for cases before 1990
- C-26/91 - for cases since 1990 from the Court
of Justice

Catch words
Keywords and phrases allocated to Judgments. These describe very concisely the
questions of law covered in a case, e.g.
- water pollution
- directive 76/464/EEC
CELEX number
This is often referred to as a DOC.NUM. It refers to the document number used
in the CELEX database the Official Legal database of the European Communities,
e.g. the CELEX number for a Judgment is

Citations
All numerical citations to documents made in a record, e.g.
- 95/C100/09 - OJ notice

Concerns
This field contains the document numbers of the acts quoted in the operative
part of Court decisions, e.g.
- 385R1999
- ec treaty article 10
- 1999/85
Cross reference
This fields gives a very broad search. It links related documents using CELEX
numbers. Enter, in CELEX number format, the number of the legislation you are
interested in and a search will retrieve all related records, ie: records that
it modifies or that modify it and records with the legislation as the legal
base or that cite it in the text, e.g.
379L0112
Dates
A group index containing all possible date fields: Date of document, Date of
publication, Date lodged, Date inforce, Date of judgment, End of validity, in
the format yyyy-mm-dd (you can use
date
operators for date range searching, e.g.
1998-04-31~1999-04-31)
Document number
This field is very useful to quickly retrieve a document when you know a reference
number and the form it is cited, e.g.

This field contains, in CELEX number format, earlier acts prior to the decision
process, ie: all legal acts a proposal seeks to modify, e.g.

Publication references to European Court Reports by year, part and page number,
e.g.

Free text
Any word or phrase in the title and text of a document. Legislation and case
numbers can also be searched in the same format as found in the Official Journal,
e.g.
Judge
Name of the Judge in a case (highlighted in Full analytical), e.g.
Schockweiler
Legal base
The field contains the document numbers of the articles of treaties, directives,
regulations which form the legal basis of the document, e.g.

Legal instrument
Form or type of the procedure (seen in Full analytical), e.g.
Modifications
This field links all records that directly have an affect on each other by a
unique CELEX number. Records that amend, add, replace, adopt etc. e.g.

Modifed by
This field contains the CELEX number of all legislation that has modified a
particular record. For example to retrieve all documents that have been modified
by Directive 90/220/EEC, e.g.

Modifies
This field contains the CELEX number of all legislation that modifies a particular
record. For example to retrieve all documents that modify Directive 90/220/EEC,
e.g.

Names
Company names or individual's names such as MEP names from the European European
Parliament, names of Rapporteurs and parties in DGIV cases, e.g.

The country / place name of a Court, e.g.

Parties
Names of the plaintiffs and defendants in cases before the European Court of
Justice and Court of First Instance. This index contains the words of each name
as well as the whole name allowing you to type part of a company name, e.g.

Publication reference
Official Journal and European Court Report references in their complete form
as follows:

Note: European Court Reports' publication references may indicate
0000 as a page reference. This indicates that the doucment has not yet been

Publication year
Year of publication. This field can be used to limit a search to a particular
year.
Date operators can be used
for range searching, e.g.
- 2002 - for all documents published in 2002
- >1990 - for documents from 1991
- 1990~1993 - for records during and between those
years
Register
The subject classification system used in the CELEX database and Directory of
Community Legislation in Force. The index contains 8 number codes and the natural
language expansion for each code, e.g.

Words and phrases used to index the records. This includes country names and
regions, e.g.

Subsequent acts
This field contains, in CELEX number format, acts subsequent to the decision
process, ie: all proposed modifications of a legal act, e.g.

Treaty
All the Treaties of the European Union, e.g
- accession treaty
- amsterdam treaty
Type
Classification of record types. This allows you to limit a search to a particular
type of document, e.g.
Words in title
Any word or phrase in the title of a document. This field may provide a more
accurate search than Free text. Legislation and case numbers can also be searched
in the same format as found in the Official Journal, e.g.
- 90/220
- transport and hazardous waste
