No records retrieved warnings can be caused by a variety of problems:

1. Have you typed/spelt your search term correctly?

Open the index open the index to select the terms you require as this will eliminate typing and spelling errors. Have you got dates and reference numbers in the correct format: yyyy-mm-dd?

2. Have you typed your search term in the correct search field?

You may have typed the term you required in the field above or below the correct field. This error can also be avoided by using the index open the index to select terms.

3. Have you used the correct Boolean operators between search terms and search fields?

The retrieval software searches by default for search terms next to each other and in the order they are entered onto the search form, eg: health safety. If you have used boolean operators in your search strategy check that they are correct and that the boolean operators you have used to combine search fields are correct. Remember:

4. Have you used the correct search form?

If you are using one of the search forms that covers a section of the database, e.g. Case Law, try repeating your search using the Advanced search which covers the complete database.

5. Did you clear the search form before entering this search strategy?

If the answer is No, check to see if there are any un-required elements from your previous search strategy still on the search form. Or click to clear the form and start again.

Of course, it is possible that no records match your search strategy!
